Teachers Speak:

How digital life is shaping our children’s well-being, learning, and future

This October, The WellSpring Parent Council’s Digital Awareness & Safety Committee hosted a Coffee Morning to explore one of today’s most pressing questions:

How is digital life shaping our children’s well-being, learning, and future?

To begin the conversation, the committee gathered insights from 25 teachers, counselors, and staff across Pre-K to Grade 12. These educators - who see children’s behavior and development daily - shared honest reflections on the impact of technology in classrooms and beyond.

What teachers are seeing

The survey revealed what many parents may already sense: our children no longer “go online” - they live online.
From short-form videos to late-night gaming and constant notifications, digital life is influencing how students think, feel, and learn.

Some of the top trends teachers reported include:

  • Shorter attention spans and a growing need for constant stimulation

  • Fatigue and poor sleep from late-night screen use

  • Social media pressure and comparison affecting confidence and empathy

  • AI shortcuts replacing deep learning and problem-solving

  • Online conflict and exposure to inappropriate or harmful content

As one teacher put it:

“Students are overstimulated, under-rested, and emotionally shaped by their screens.”

Teachers’ main concerns

Looking ahead, educators highlighted several rising concerns:

  • AI overreliance - children letting chatbots “think” for them

  • Digital addiction - overstimulation, poor sleep, and emotional fatigue

  • Deepfakes and misinformation - fake videos fueling new forms of bullying

  • Identity and mental health risks - comparison culture and “AI friends”

  • Privacy and security - younger children creating accounts without understanding data risks

While technology brings remarkable learning opportunities, teachers agreed that balance must be taught - it doesn’t come naturally.

What can parents do?

Teachers had a united message for families:

“Children cannot self-regulate their screen use - they need help, education, and structure.”

They encouraged parents to:

  • Monitor sleep and screen time, not just grades

  • Talk regularly about digital behavior and online experiences

  • Encourage offline play, reading, and real-world connection

  • Set family screen-free times and keep devices out of bedrooms

  • Stay informed about the apps, games, and platforms children use

One teacher summarized it perfectly:

“Technology will shape them either way - our role is to shape how.”

A community that learns and grows together

At its heart, the Parent Council represents the spirit of the WellSpring community - families and educators coming together to listen, learn, and strengthen one another.

Whether through discussions like this Coffee Morning or upcoming initiatives throughout the year, the Parent Council provides a space where ideas are shared, experiences are valued, and our school’s culture of care continues to grow.

Together, we’re building more than a school community - we’re nurturing a partnership that helps every child thrive in mind, heart, and character.
