Instructional Program – Fall 2020

As the 2020-21 school year begins, we are working hard to provide a safe and effective learning environment for students and staff. We are regularly working with the Ministry of Education to ensure our program is following the latest requirements.

Below are details about our Early Childhood, Elementary and Secondary programs. Please let us know how we can support you.

OVERVIEW

When school starts on August 30th, we will begin the first week online. This allows a safe introduction to the school year considering both safety and academic procedures and expectations. TWS will provide two learning options beginning September 6:

  1. Online Option – This option allows students to study at home without coming to school.

    • Joining face-to-face sessions or mini-lessons electronically on Zoom
    • Self-paced work at home
    • Examinations in person at school
  2. Face-to-Face Blended Option – This option is a mix of mostly in person and some online.
    • KG-G1 – Five days per week in person at school
    • Grades 2-12 – Sunday-Wednesday in person at school, Thursday study at home with a mix of synchronous and asynchronous study using SeeSaw (G1-5) and Canvas (G6-12).

September Adjusted Schedule:

The Ministry of Education requires schools to phase in face-to-face instruction over the first 6 weeks of school. TWS will implement the following schedule through September and then continue with the face-to-face and online options.

Face-to-Face Phases (Online students will continue online from week 1):

Phase 1 – Weeks 1-2 – KG and LifeSkills face-to-face; G1-12 online
Phase 2 – Weeks 3-4 – KG-Grade 3 and Life Skills face-to-face; G4-12 online
Phase 3 – Week 5 – KG-Grade 6 and LifeSkills face-to-face; G7-12 online
Phase 4 – Week 6 – All students who are attending face-to-face will begin school.

*A specific calendar is given to all parents with exact dates and times.

TWS is staffed with highly qualified teachers who are ready to teach and engage with students in person and online.

Common Terms:

Synchronous: occurs at the same time; simultaneous
Asynchronous: does not occur at the same time; not simultaneous
SeeSaw: SeeSaw is a Learning Management System that Grade 1-5 uses for classroom instruction, submission of homework and relevant teacher videos or resources.
Canvas: Canvas is a Learning Management System that Grade 6-12 uses for classroom instruction, submission of homework and relevant teacher videos or resources.

EARLY CHILDHOOD AND ELEMENTARY

During COVID-19 restrictions, each classroom has a maximum of 10 students (KG) and 15 students (G1-5) spaced at least 1.5m apart with their own desk and supplies. A team of qualified teaching assistants and a teacher will give the instruction and learning activities each day. Students will remain in their classroom entering and exiting from the exterior door with the exception of using the bathroom. This limits unnecessary movement and contact in other parts of the school.

  • KG-G1 Classes meet face-to-face five days per week 8:00-3:00 (Thursday until 1:30)
  • G2-5 Classes meet face-to-face four days per week (Sunday-Wednesday) and one day (Thursday) at home using a mix of synchronous and asynchronous instruction.
  • Online option:
    1. Requires synchronous Zoom attendance for some of the activities during the day using the schedule given by the teacher
    2. Practice will be done at home
    3. A device is needed for each child at home

SECONDARY

  • G6-12 Classes meet face-to-face four days per week (Sunday-Wednesday) and one day (Thursday) at home using a mix of synchronous and asynchronous instruction.
  • Online option:
